Leo Pre-Laminitis

  • May 2008: I purchased Leo about two weeks after her 5th birthday. At that point she'd only had a total of probably 30 days of basic training, and no experience with baths, clippers, trailering, and limited basic grooming. She already had a butter-smooth, naturally slow & comfy jog, and she was the most responsive horse I'd ever ridden. AND SMART!
  • Late fall 2008: We were well on our way to a relaxed lope, haunch and forehand pivots, sidepassing and leg yields. We had a blast trail riding the snowy trails with our buddies all winter, even on those cold Michigan single-degree days!
  • March 2009: I took her to a schooling show, which was only her third or fourth time in a trailer. She did tremendously well; we placed in all of our classes!
  • Summer/Fall 2009: We went to several other local shows (placing in most of our walk-trot classes), as well as a Judged Pleasure Trail Competion (reserve hi-point), and a 15-mile benefit trail ride for the Cheff Center for Therapeutic Riding.
  • November 2009: I moved Leo to a new barn that offered an improved feed program, large indoor & outdoor riding arenas, and an environment where she wouldn't get "picked on" as much. She took to the move very well!
  • Spring 2010: Leo and I made the decision that showing wasn't going to be "our thing" - we needed something more mentally stimulating! And thus began our training for Competitive Trail Riding & Extreme Cowboy Racing! Check out the American Competitive Trail Horse Association & Extreme Cowboy Association for some examples!
  • May 24, 2010: Leo was diagnosed with acute laminitis.
